Short version: wipe the acrylic panel with a dry, soft or microfiber cloth — never a liquid cleaner or spray. Keep the lamp indoors and away from moisture. There's no bulb to replace on LED models, and no batteries unless you've chosen a specifically cordless design.
Our lamps, like the Enterprise Ship Display Lamp, are genuinely low-maintenance — but "low-maintenance" isn't the same as "no maintenance," and a few habits will keep the acrylic looking clear for years instead of clouding over.
Dusting the acrylic panel
A dry microfiber cloth is the right tool for the etched acrylic panel itself. Wipe gently along the panel rather than scrubbing at the etched lines directly — the etching is a physical cut into the surface, and aggressive scrubbing with anything abrasive can dull the fine detail over time. Skip liquid cleaners, glass spray, and alcohol-based wipes; they aren't necessary for acrylic and can cloud the surface rather than clean it.
Handling the base and cord
Keep the base flat on a stable surface and avoid pulling on the power cord to unplug it — grip the plug itself instead. If the lamp includes an inline switch on the cord, that's the intended on/off control; there's no need to unplug the unit between uses unless you're storing it long-term.
Power and the LED itself
You won't need to source a replacement bulb for an LED-based lamp — the built-in strip is rated for roughly 50,000 hours of use, which works out to many years of normal evening use before it would even begin to dim. If a lamp ever stops lighting up well before that, the issue is more likely the cord, adapter, or switch than the LED itself.
Storage between seasons
For seasonal pieces — Halloween or Christmas designs, for instance — store the lamp somewhere cool and dry, ideally with the acrylic panel protected by a soft cloth to prevent dust buildup and scratching while it's packed away. Avoid stacking anything heavy on top of the panel in storage, since sustained pressure can stress the acrylic even though it's fairly durable in normal use.
A different set of rules for non-acrylic pieces
Not everything in the catalog is an LED-and-acrylic build. The LED Light Drawing Board, for example, ships with its own cleaning cloths and specific care notes — avoid permanent markers, keep it away from water, and unplug it when it's not actively in use. Always check the specific product's care notes if it's not a standard acrylic display lamp, since materials like hand-cut stained glass or a dry-erase surface have their own rules.
FAQ
Can I clean the acrylic panel with glass cleaner?
No, it's best to avoid liquid cleaners and sprays on the acrylic. A dry, soft or microfiber cloth is enough for normal dusting, and liquids risk clouding the surface rather than cleaning it.
Do I need to replace the LED bulb eventually?
No. The built-in LED strip is rated for approximately 50,000 hours of use, which is many years of typical evening use, and there's no separate bulb to source or swap.
Are these lamps safe to use outdoors?
They're built for indoor use. Keep them away from moisture, direct weather, and prolonged direct sunlight to protect both the acrylic and the internal electronics.
