A display lamp can fit on a shelf while its cable cannot reach the outlet cleanly. Plan the entire route—including the drop from the shelf, any controller position and the final approach to power—before settling on the display spot.

Measure the route, not a straight line

Use string to follow the intended cable path from the lamp position to the outlet. Let the string travel around shelf edges and behind furniture exactly as a cable would. Add enough slack to avoid a taut connection, then measure the string. Do not assume a diagonal, unsupported shortcut will remain tidy.

Mark four points on a sketch: lamp, shelf edge, accessible control point and outlet. If the product has an inline control, verify its actual position on the supplied cable rather than choosing the control point from memory.

Score two possible routes

Reject any route that leaves a cable across a doorway or traffic path. Avoid pinching it beneath furniture, forcing sharp bends or placing it where shelf contents can pull it. Follow the lamp’s supplied setup guidance and use only compatible power equipment.

Do a removable setup first

Place the lamp without permanent clips or adhesive. Route the unplugged cable, then check that the display remains stable and the connection can be reached without moving heavy furniture. After power is connected, view the shelf from the room’s main approach and adjust only if it can be done safely.

Recheck the route from a child’s or pet’s usual approach if either shares the room. A cable hidden from the main seat can still be exposed at floor level. If no safe route works, choose another display location rather than adding unverified power equipment.
